European Parliament resolution on the need for actions to address the continued oppression and fake elections in Belarus
The European Parliament has condemned the authoritarian regime of Aliaksandr Lukashenka in Belarus, denouncing the upcoming January 26, 2025, presidential elections as fraudulent. Its resolution urges the EU and global community to reject the sham elections, support Belarusian civil society, and hold the regime accountable for human rights violations.
In a joint resolution, the European Parliament reiterated its non-recognition of Aliaksandr Lukashenka's presidency, citing systematic repression and human rights abuses. Over 1,250 political prisoners remain detained under dire conditions, with widespread suppression of dissent. The resolution condemns the regime's complicity in Russia's aggression against Ukraine and its use of anti-extremism laws to target independent media.
