"A sham." How does the international democratic community react to the elections in Belarus?

The seventh presidential election* in Belarus is scheduled for January 26, 2025. They take place in a climate of fear, oppression, and persecution. Since 1996, no election campaign in Belarus has been recognized by independent observers as transparent and compliant with democratic standards. This year, as in previous election campaigns, there are no international observers present, but the international democratic community is actively speaking out about the elections* in Belarus. The "Human Rights Defenders for Free Elections" campaign reports the comments of European politicians and institutions.

Head of the European Parliament: tomorrow's elections in Belarus are a sham

President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metsola called the presidential elections in Belarus scheduled for January 26 a sham.

"My message to the people of Belarus is: keep strong, we have your back, the time of dictatorship will be over. Democracy will prevail," she wrote on her social media page.

"They don't give legitimacy to the regime." Robin Wagener, a member of the German Bundestag, spoke about the elections* in Belarus

He posted his statements about this event on his X page.

"On January 26, 2025, Aliaksandr Lukashenka will hold a pseudo-presidential election in Belarus — without real opponents, without independent election monitoring, and without a possibility to vote abroad. It is not an election that deserves that name. It is called a dictatorship. Pseudo-elections do not give any legitimacy to the Lukashenka regime.

There are still more than 1,200 political prisoners in Belarus. People are still detained for participating in protests for fair elections in 2020 or for defending human rights. Many political prisoners died due to the inhumane conditions of imprisonment.

We will continue to stand on the side of the Belarusian democratic movement and provide all possible support to the democratic forces in exile."
